Description of the assignment

Rail Cantech is seeking a Construction Manager for its project management team building the Ottawa LRT Confederation Line Extension.

The project is located in Ottawa and is divided into two extensions to the existing Confederation Line. The East Connector adds 12.5 km of double track from the existing Blair Station to the suburb of Orleans, and the West Connector adds 14.5 km of double track.

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Manager is responsible for inspecting the progress of work in progress, monitoring and reporting on quality inspections, and supporting the Project Manager in administrative tasks. Your role will be to carry out progress inspections, coordinate with project teams, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This position requires an understanding of basic construction principles and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic field environment. More specifically, you will:

 

Project management:

  • Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of work.
  • Collaborate with project teams to establish project objectives, schedules and budgets.
  • Monitor project progress, identify problems and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Monitor and verify site resources and coordinate with field managers.
  • Field inspections and surveys:

Inspect and document the progress of work in progress.

  • Carry out quality inspections with the quality control team and follow up on corrective measures.
  • Participate in health and safety site visits with project management.

Technical support:

  • Provide administrative support to field management team.
  • Review daily site reports and progress reports.
  • Review and verify subcontractors' daily site reports.
  • Support the field management team by reviewing engineering designs, specifications and construction plans to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Assist field management team in resolving technical issues that arise during construction or maintenance activities.

Documentation and reporting:

  • Prepare detailed reports, drawings and documents related to field inspections, surveys and project activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of project milestones, expenditures and resources.
  • Produce progress reports and communicate results to project stakeholders.

Safety and compliance:

  • Adhere to safety protocols and ensure compliance with rail industry regulations.
  • Promote a safety culture among project teams and contractors.
  • Participate in safety audits and investigations as required.

Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Previous experience in Canada or North America on LRT projects is an asset;
  • Good knowledge of construction principles.
  • Good knowledge of construction principles. Familiarity with industry regulations, safety standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products, including online applications such as SharePoint, OneDrive and electronic document management (EDM) systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license (G for Ontario or 5 for Quebec) and good driving record.
  • Some weekend and night work.
  • Bilingual English/French
