Description of the assignment
What is the project?
The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:
- A 1.5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.5 m diameter slurry TBM);
- Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);
- An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.
The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.
What you will do:
Provide proactive hands-on field support in preparing, deploying, and applying health and safety procedures and tools while acting as a visible and communicative leader on the management of subcontractors and the resolution of non-conformances.
Concretely, your tasks will be:
- Act as a communicative leader on the management of direct construction team members and subcontractors
- Anticipate and prepare activities including safety standards such as reviewing workplans, participating in KOM with subcontractors and the construction team and by participating in Lean meetings
- Conduct and oversee comprehensive site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and field audits across multiple trades and activities
- Support site activities by applying safety standards and assisting subcontractors and the construction team with compliance.
- Organize and monitor site safety visits, including follow-up actions.
- Evaluate the safety performance of subcontractors, the construction team and suppliers, ensuring they meet the projects safety standards.
- Proactively coordinate and lead from beginning to end relevant topics while communicating proactively with other departments and subcontractors to ensure efficient implementation of safety processes.
- Manage QHSE onboarding and induction sessions for new staff and subcontractors.
- Prepare and update health and safety documentation (inductions, procedures, forms, checklists, etc.) and ensure timely deployment to teams
- Assist in incident reporting and follow-up, ensuring corrective actions are documented and tracked.
- Contribute to emergency preparedness activities and ensure readiness of response plans.
Profile
- Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Risk Management, Industrial Hygiene, or Engineering
- Minimum 5-8 years of experience in Health & Safety roles on the field of large infrastructure projects;
- Proven experience in tunneling or underground works with TBM operations, marine works or civil/earthworks;
- Experience working on projects with high-risk environments (nuclear, offshore, or similar);
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of current health and safety legislation;
- Familiarity with safety management systems and incident reporting tools;
- Strong leadership and communication skills;
- Exhibit strong time management skills;
- High attention to detail and proactive approach to problem-solving.
