Description of the assignment

JOB TITLE: Apprentice Piling Operative

FUNCTION SB3 – HS2

ROLE LEVEL Reports to: Site supervisor/Construction manager/Labour manager

LOCATION: Site Based – HS2 Area North, West Midlands

ROLE PURPOSE: Complete a two-year Piling Apprenticeship, successfully attaining the necessary training and qualifications. Following this, undertake an additional (company-required) third year to establish a chosen direction or discipline, to meet business needs.

INTERFACES: Internal:  SB3 site teams, JV Partner Plant Teams Supervisors, Operators and Operatives.
External:  Subcontractors and Suppliers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

- Have responsibility for Health & Safety, for personal safety, and Safety of others at site.

- Ensure that you have the correct PPE and comply with any additional PPE/safety requirements at sites.

- Attend training modules & courses (including travelling across the UK), site based NVQ meetings as required and represent the   company in a professional manner.

- Report unsafe conditions, observations, near misses, incidents and accidents back were instructed to the BSL Safety Department and Site      Management.

-  Follow Instruction from Site Foreman, Supervisors, Mentors and Training Instructors. Work only as directed and only undertake tasks you are trained and competent to do.

- Duties and responsibilities vary from one job to another but, in general, are not limited to:

- Record operating data such as quantities, and stocks used, materials or substances.

- Communication with other workers, using signals, radios, or telephones.

- Carry out physical heavy tasks.

- Prepare and clean up construction sites e.g. move materials and equipment and handle and distribute construction material.

- Assist with loading and unloading of vehicles with supplies, equipment, and construction materials.

- Move tools, equipment, and construction materials to and from work areas.

- Shovel spoil and other materials.
- Assemble and dismantle ramps, catwalks, shoring, exclusion zones and barricades on construction sites.

Profile

PERSONAL QUALITYS AND EXPERIANCE: 

- Must be enthusiastic and motivated, work well with others, can listen to ideas, and obtain feedback from supervisors, foremen & mentors.

- Be self-motivated and be able to work with limited direct management, must be able to use their own initiative and judgement, complete the required Apprenticeship Training modules and associated NVQ’s.

- Be able to maintain relationship with Site Management structure, clients, (including Project Manager, Contracts Manager, workforce, and other contractors on site).

-  Flexibility – Has to be prepared to work anywhere within the UK to suit the company’s needs, including any overtime hours, weekend working, and shift working as may be required.

- Be able to follow procedures, identify, utilise, and promote best practice according to quality procedures.

- Previous work experience in the construction industry is desirable.

- Due to the location of our sites, a full UK driver's license is preferred.

- Applicants cannot have a previous NVQ piling qualification. CSCS card is desirable, not essential as company will provide this. Please note the obtaining of a CSCS card is essential for the continuation of the apprenticeship. 

WORKING ENVIROMENT:

- Construction site based across the UK.

- This role may require living and working away from home, being prepared to transfer to work anywhere within the UK to suit the requirements of the apprenticeship, training modules and company’s needs.

- Some modules require attendance at training centres (including a classroom type environment), and BSL Plant Yard.

- For health and safety reasons and site requirements applicants must be aged 18 years or above.
